Welcome to the New USDN Forums!
  • Welcome to the new Vanilla forums!

    1. Please Register
    • You need to register a new account.
    • You have lots of sso login options: google, facebook, twitter, openid.
    • You can still have an "old fashion account/pass account", or a combination of any of these login options at the same time.

    2. Post!

    • Vanilla is modern and sexy.  There is nice mobile support.
    • I am keeping the number of categories to a minimum, and initially only using them to separate public and private discussions.
    • Tags can be used for more granular classification (and grow naturally, and be homoerotic at times I imagine).

    Other Notes:
    • I plan to update the site's CSS and add a few plugins as we use the site more.
    • Please suggest improvements as we go.
    • The previous iteration of the forums can be found here: www.usdn.ca/forums/archive/minibb/
  • We fear change.
  • The Twitter sign in isn't actually working.

    Hi!
  • Face book works.
  • I for one support our new Vanilla Forum overlords
  • I fixed the twitter SSO... I'm curious to see how that integrates your tweets.
  • I don't imagine it does at all.  I expect it's just using it for the authentication.
  • Oh god.  We have forum pics again.  OH GOD NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  • Ohh yes. Forum Pics!

↑___ and just to get it out of the way, let me be the first.
  • Something tells me that the "Tags" list might have a few choice topics on the top of the list... I cant wait for the outcome.
  • Its bright.
  • well, gif's avatar certain captured the theme of these forums, i see. hahaha
  • Does anyone have my old avatar that made you all think I was some fat dude?
  • I r iz he that was formerly known as mckool
  • I'm not sure I like this yet.
  • Oh Clark tell me you have that Canadian/TUrkish flag you made for me years ago
  • i dont like it...

  • I like it through my BlackBerry. It seems to fill in nicely and I don't need to zoom or anything.
  • i need to get used to it.  color scheme is terrible but i am assuming we can customize it locally css.  perhaps the default colorscheme could be better though?

readability is definitely not as good.  a function of it trying to look so clean, likely.  alternating backgrounds for each post would be nice, maybe background should differ for user banner as well above the message so we each have a distinct block.

also i would move the user picture off to the left of the message block to make the user banner thinner.  right now user banners are taking up all the screen realestate
  • or, alternatively, the whole user banner could be to the left as is common on so many other forums.  maybe disable user profile pics for mobile page to save screen realestate as well
  • I will play around with the look and feel.  Colors will change completely.  This is just the default oob.

I also pretty much agree with everything awkward said - I will improve the readability but it is hard to say exactly how until I play around with it.

I think the mobile version looks pretty good as-is though.

I find the notifications annoying out of the box, for a forum like this... but that can be easily changed per user.
  • Seems good , bring on the change !!!
  • Akira are you going to make me my Ed Norton pic again? :)
  • I approve Clark, I approve. Thank you
  • They're pretty flexible.  Everything can be styled and changed.  I had the forums up for a test run a few months ago and the general feeling was that people liked them.

You can see some other sites that use Vanilla and look fairly different:
    http://forums.penny-arcade.com/
    http://forums.oreilly.com/

Pre made themes (and other addons) are available here:
    http://vanillaforums.org/addon/browse/themes/recent/2

So, we have plenty to work with.

Edit:  In the short term, the default theme has 7 colour options.  We might want to switch to the black and white look.  The baby blue is a bit rough :p
  • yay new forums!
  • Looks real good on my iPhone.
  • <------ Look its me, TheTICK ;)
  • Azzman, I tried looking and couldn;t find it.   I even tried the Wayback Machine, and it does not appear to be on there anywhere.

  • Complaints:
      - Ugly.  Can be fixed with CSS.
      - No quotes.  No select-and-quote (which was great!)
  • The Quotes plugin is one of the most popular.

I expect Clark can drop it in.  Or give me teh powerz.
  • Complaint: I don't have my old avatar. Harder to read.
  • mobile looks good
  • I disabled:
twitter sso (I didn't like how it integrates)
the wysiwyg editor (playbook didn't seem to like it, I will try another one)
  • Frankly, I don't find this ugly at all. The font isn't the most legible (serifs), but I'm massively in favor of white/bright background and dark text. I dislike sites that inverse the colors.
  • I find it quite attractive, myself. Though, I don't really care for the baby blue.

That being said, I can see how a couple things would make it a bit easier to read still. Could likely use a bit more horizontal screen space. And subtle alternating row colours wouldn't hurt.
  • I like the mobile version
  • gotta agree with etter and epi. nice layout terrible colours though.

google sign in is a little flaky, it signed me in but kicked me back to a login screen not the thread. works fine if i click discussions from that login screen
  • Can we get the old USDN icon back?
  • I couldn't find that oldschool pimp pic I used to use, this will have to do ...

Added. I used the slightly less popular quote selection plugin, but it looked a bit better to me.

All you do: highlight the text you want to quote. A button appears. Click it.

    Its awesomely true

    Wow. That's hot.

The block quote is a bit subtle. I wonder if you could modify the plugin to blockquote and italic?

    I like.
  • Etter said: I wonder if you could modify the plugin to blockquote and italic?

I would be surprised if I can't. When I start to tweak the CSS, I'll look at it.

    Some more suggestions:
    - Spoiler tag
    - Working wysiwyg editor
    - File uploading (maybe)
    - Page numbers at the top and bottom
    - Page views on the discussion list

This isn't working for me. I cannot figure out how to quote

  • DrAwkward said: I cannot figure out how to quo

  • Also, I couldn't log in from FF at work. Chrome seems better.
  • Things to add to the laundry list: Grab the 'favicon' from the other forums and move it into these ones.

The favicon seems to be stored along with the theme.
