Board Games
• So I just picked up 7 Wonders (to play this weekend), and I've gone on a bit of a board game geek out kick and now want to buy the new Risk Legacy.

I'm excited about 7 wonders it has won a lot of awards and is highly reviewed. Anyone here played it or have any experience with it? I also picked up the 8th wonder promo from BGG as it is funny (shoot-the-moon style play I believe).

Anyways, here is why Risk Legacy is compelling: every game you play will influence future games (alter the board permanently). There are single use stickers that have permanent effects; when you choose something from two options you tear up the other card. I'm not sure if the board has a limited number of plays (I believe it might ~30, watching the review now). It's risk but with these new features to make it more compelling again. Risk was a big hit with my family but we haven't touched it in a while; we still play with my dad's 25+ year old copy, with the armies stored in old tobacco tins (nice smell after so long).

Anyone have any favorite games that are a hit with: intelligent friends, family, etc.?

There may have been an old thread on this, and I know JohnnyC has some good input
• whoa auto-embedding makes my post tits!
• If only there were someone on this forum that was completely obsessed with board game. Some dude who has like a hundred board game in his apartment. A man who is shorter than you'd expect...
• Is he shorter than you'd expect? I didn't find that.
• Trademark told me that once. I'm making fun of Trademark. TRADEMARK IS DUMB.
• Here is Keith Law's blog about boardgames:
http://meadowparty.com/blog/?tag=boardgames

He's a baseball writer for ESPN, but also a board game geek. So, you might find some gems in his top 30.

I know this is old news, but I played Dominion for the first time a couple weeks back and it was super.

I also played Carcassonne that day and it was also a pile of fun.

Both took minutes to learn, were quite fun, and obviously have a decent amount of strategy.

I realize they're both pretty popular games, so maybe you already know them. Anyone that doesn't should try them out.

• To the real Awkward: I will message you on steam some time to play 7 wonders and a few other ones that we play.
• The Penny-Arcade board game is basically Dominion with some minor tweaks (Which I found welcome) and a lot of giggle inducing Penny Arcade humour. You can't help but laugh a little at the cascading of Touchweiners. (That is an actual card).

Or multiple scrotums.
• Kernon's inability to manifest more than one Scrotumm was definitely funny, if a little tragic.
• Yeah, I want to give the PA version a try at PAX. I might pick it up when I'm there.
• I do own Carcassonne and Catan and enjoy both. I have played Dominion a couple times and enjoyed it mostly. I have a copy of Puerto Rico at my parents that we've only played once so far unfortunately, so I don't have a handle on it. Also have Power Grid which I've played a dozen times.

Catan and Carcassonne are great, if you are interested in modern-style (i.e. not Monopoly, Axis and Allies, or Risk) games, these are certainly a great place to start.

Dominion was fun but I don't have enough experience with it to make good judgement.

Puerto Rico seemed a bit unrefined and random, but it might just be the learning curve creating an faux complexity.

Power Grid devolved into who was best at Math (me) or random luck on the deck draw. I ordered some promos for this game from BGG that I think will be the perfect tweak to make this more interesting again (warehouse for storing 3 of ANY resource, drawn cards that create shortages or surpluses of certain fuels). Stuff that really throws a wrench into the mix. It's also possibly we suck at being strategic, if people can plan the cost of resources/city buying/etc. so well. Also it seems like Western US is completely underpowered/too expensive. Still highly recommend.

I was interested in Agricola but at my local game store it was a steep $75. I want to play it a few times before dropping that dough on it, or grab it online.

• I can sell you my copy of Agricola.
• They just released a Klingon Monopoly a lil while ago

I friend of mine (and Phro's) just ordered a copy. She is possibly having a Klingon Monopoly party while she is home for christmas.

Nerds. Also quoting yay!
• ok fine.

Play 7 Wonders and Dominion. They are amazing and almost everyone likes 'em.

Puerto Rico: Awk didn't think too hard about the 'random' comment, since there's actually extremely little randomness in the game (only the plantation tiles that come out and player order). It's damn close to multi-player chess in most people's opinions. A good game, high learning curve, strategic, not for everyone. (Way less random than, say, Power Grid).

Power Grid hits a sweet spot for me in terms of randomness and unknown information. I love it. Still not for everyone.

If you like Dominion, consider also trying Ascension or Thunderstone (very D&D theme).

Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride have been established by now as pretty good "introductory" games with some real replay value.

And, of course, anyone is still welcome to join me and Kikhan in Through the Ages (which I've been playing NONSTOP since whenever I mentioned it and learned about it because it's possibly The Best Game there I said I'm not taking it back).

I still believe this is one of the better strategy games that I've played, and can introduce the concept of leveling to people. Depending who else is sitting at the table, you may need to be thinking on different levels at all times to make the correct strategic move.
• Risk Legacy looks pretty interesting for a group of regulars.

I do enjoy Puerto Rico but I've only gotten to play it a few times (despite owning it). It is one of the least random games I have ever played. Even the one random element is heavily mitigated.
• Yes I apologize for the "random" word. I did not mean random events that have a large impact on the game, but more a haphazzard game flow. I really need to play it more than once to get a hold on it, though.
• Edit: What crazy tag system does this forum use?
• The creator of a discussion can assign any tags to it they wish. There is an ajax lookup as you type in a tag, so that you can select existing ones.

I'm not sure if we'll keep it. I don't see people using it a lot and I don't want to see "dick" all over the front of the site TOO MUCH. Just a little.
• I like the tags, if we can avoid throwing the cock around all the time.
• I meant more like "What is the syntax for embedded elements in posts".

uhhh ... this is USDN man.
• One game I find pretty fun that I might suggest is...... oh shit, i can't remember the game. hey cataldo what was that game that Not Jeff, me, and those two other guys play at your house last year? it had to do with materials you buy, produce, and sell, and the point is to get the most of it and get hte highest points. i kinda liked that.

awkward you might like that too. sadly i can picture the game and i can picture Not Jeff saying it, but i can't remember the damn name. but i know he likes it because he likes math and all.

Actually, was hte game called Containers?
• PlatooN said: uhhh ... this is USDN man.

Well, I didn't say /never/.
• I have no idea what kind of markup language this place uses.
• But apparently some basic HTML stuff works, like bold.
• A lot of links will be automatically converted. I'm testing an image here:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a7/Batman_Lee.png/250px-Batman_Lee.png

Okay, that didn't work. But there is a plugin for creating image previews, but it looks like it is in rough shape.

Oh, we should make our own NSFW plugin!
• Containers IS a game about collecting colored cubes and buying/selling them, putting on boats. I probably didn't even play in that game, you probably just played with NotJeff (who loves it). A bit too abstract for me most of the time.

For what it's worth, in game jargon what Awk is complaining about is usually referred to as "chaos", most often specifically the human element. Puerto Rico with 5 players is extremely chaotic. With 3 players it's far far less chaotic (but of course it's almost always possible for two players to conspire, consciously or not, to make a third player lose).
• Containers, FWIW, is a good game, but REALLY abstract. If you like math, you probably like containers.

Math is hard. Let's go shopping.
• I will chime in and say that I find the Battlestar Galactica board game never fails to be fairly enjoyable and lively. I mean, as a Licensed Product you wouldn't expect it to be even a third as good as it actually is.

That son-bitch can get long though, depending how much table talk you have.
• I just posted YouTube links and they were automatically converted.

Tagging all my threads as "dick" is my silent protest against the oppressive authority of the forum admins. Maybe tagging is fine, maybe subforums are fine (General, Worth It, Mafia -- again).
• I like simple games. None of which i am very good at, but I still enjoy them.

I very much enjoy Galaxy Trucker, but only get a chance to play it once, maybe twice a year (at Cataldo's house).
• okay, then it was containers then. and yeah, that's why i only said i played it with NJ, not you as well :)

but yeah, it was quite an interesting game. too bad i didn't figure out the strategy that works right until the end. i think next time i want a rechallenge, just to see if i can do better ^^
• Oh yeah, I love Galaxy Trucker. Soooooo good. And I haven't met anyone who doesn't like it, and most people like it a lot.

Branded games are really about hit or miss as any other games in my experience. Sometimes great. I do like Battlestar Galactica, but I have trouble finding a group that wants to play it. (The length is an issue.) Chaos in the Old World is another game that falls into a similar category for me. I like it, but hard to find players.
• Anyone playing the newer lotr card game?

I have it and like it but haven't played it enough yet.
• I do like Through the Ages alot I have also been maintaing about 5 games through the months since JC mentioned it. I suck horribly though but, I still enoy it.

I love Catan and cantonne or w/e its called since the board is always different. In general on most of the games listed I approve of the comments but, tend to follow John interests and likes.
