Primarily because of of SWTOR, do we want to fire up our own USDN ventrilo server? I think we're going to need more than a couple of channels to support us.
Alternatively, we could ask CA (through John, most likely?) if we can bum a few extra channels specifically for USDN SWTOR.
Renting a server is between 6-8 bucks a month, for about 25 slots.
I'd be ok with CA. Throw CA some monies to help support theirs and get a few channels for ourselves. Lots of others still hang out on CA that could potentially be sucked into the USDN SWTOR thing.
I've decided not to support CA financially, based on the fact that they prefer to pay for stuff rather than take it when it's free. I have no idea what their cash flow is like, and I worry that someone is eventually pocketing donations regardless of the costs of running their services.
As an aside, if someone wants to run a mumble server on my machine, let me know.
If you guys would like you can always try coming onto 50dkp.com's TS. If somebody would like I could put you guy's in contact with Lunar, the owner, and you could see if he'd be willing to create a couple of channels for you.
we have barely any demand for servers now, and our needs are met, and by switching you will lose more of the worth it community that is heavily assimilated into ca
Saturday night we had a couple of groups going and the CA channels weren't sufficient. I expect that to be a more common experience especially as more folks hit 50.
However, I agree most of the time it is okay and we don't want to fragment the community unnecessarily.
What about setting up a mumble server for the times when we need more channels but continue to use CA as our primary hang out spot? Then see how things go. It could be confusing, and it's not perfect, I know.
Epiphani, if you are willing, can you setup a mumble server for us? Can I and a few others here (Turk, Akira, Wader, Etter, off the top of my head) have admin access sufficient to kick players and organize channels? Much <3.<br /> Everyone has raised a lot of good points and I appreciate it.
Edit: Stop posting at the same time and stealing my thunder Etter! I don't appreciate YOU! ;)
I don't mind the CA vent server, it seems reasonably free of douchebags, and I haven't had any issues with it. I know in the past when we were all playing LoL quite a bit, we would often just go and jump into a different, empty channel if we wanted to not be interrupted. Its not like the server itself is constantly full and has no empty channels. I'd be willing to give mumble a try if people think its better/more convenient.
I'll take a stab at putting together a mumble server on my machine. The configuration and management of mumble was pretty bad and made it a headache before, but maybe it's improved in the last year.
As for capacity - I recently (~6 months ago) upgraded the box. It's now a dual quad-core nahaelem box with 32G of memory. I run a bunch of VMs for other stuff, but we should have plenty of power left over for mumble.
Edit Re: mumble vs. vent - mumble quality has always been miles above vent for me, and it's open source. Vent's licensing model is a HUGE pain in the ass - I can't buy or run a server that supports >8 users unless I'm prepared to buy a 1000 seat multi-user server. The only complaint I've ever heard about mumble was that the client doesn't have per-user volume management (which it may have by now, it's been a while since we ran it.)
