TOR going live.
  • So for those of you playing this wonderful game with us I thought I should share a little of the pertinent information in case anybody had questions.
    1) The server is being chosen for us! (Dark Reaper server)
    2) If you are not currently signed up to be in the guild, you will have to wait to get into game
  • I put in a request to join a while ago. Not sure if you accepted it or not.
  • It still has me as "applied to" so I imagine that means I'm not currently signed up.
  • do guilds get early access today?
  • Is the onl way to order it online through Origin?
If I bought it at the store... would I need Origin?
Am I forced to use Origin if I want to play this game?
    Seriously, fuck Origin.
  • I made my purchase, and have never used anything other than the SW TOR client.
  • Hey guys,

Ann it means that Turk hasn't accepted yet and I'm not sure that he can. Tor locked the guilds a couple weeks back I believe.

Sorry Clark don't know if you need origin or not.

    FUCK MARK *fist thrust*
  • Here's what I found via google, Clark:
Star Wars: The Old Republic will not require the Origin desktop application to download, patch or play the game, regardless of whether the game was originally purchased through Origin or at a retail outlet.

However, we encourage you to go ahead and try the Origin desktop app with Star Wars: The Old Republic or other EA games. Origin streamlines game downloads, makes game updates quick, easy and seamless for players, and offers social connectivity to your gaming friends.
  • Also, why won't you accept me for who I am, Turk? I TRY SO HARD TO FIT IN!
  • I <3 you anne. <br />If I coulda added you I totally would have. You do have super secret access to the section for us here :D
  • Turk - why is it a west coast server?
  • Because I'm west coast and everyone loves me?
  • You've got a province and a half between you and a coast.
  • The server isn't in the ocean.
  • Because I also love Anneveld, I've bought the game.
  • Sweet!

Was talking to Johnny about the early access threads on the SWTOR forums. Pretty hilarious. I especially love the "I AM GOING TO CANCEL MY PREORDER BECAUSE I HAVENT GOTTEN IMMEDIATE ACCESS!!!" ones. I'm pretty sure if you're that upset about not getting to play IMMEDIATELY, you're probably not going to cancel.
  • Also, angry forum threads are always the best way to get your way.
  • i do find it frustrating that different people are given access at different times. one of the best things on a mmorpg is a fresh server. first to content, race to beat X. 7 days is generally a pretty insurmountable disadvantage for those that care about these things... perhaps those people preordered early. Maybe its for gradual server loading, maybe not. Hopefully as people get access they launch new servers each day until it's open, so you can start fresh or start on a slightly older one where the initial content wont be as mobbed... as to your preferences.

Think also for friends that get access at different times... hopefully they will wait so you can play together, but it would be lame to join and see Tim and Akira level 25 already and just be forever behind.
  • The counter argument is that when everyone has access at once, it's a race to kill the 5 mobs that are available and hundreds of people sit around in the starting zones camping the quest requirements.

WoW was a mess for a few weeks when it came out. I expect SW will be too, once it's open to the public.

I mean, the early access was a bonus, but nothing extra was paid for that bonus. They never promised everyone would get it the same moment - and it's likely best not everyone get it at the same moment.

(I also have never quite gotten the fresh server thing ... but I get that people care about that. So much lost epeen stroking!)
  • That's true. Would be funny if despite the staggering and wave system of launching the game still has terrible first day problems. We'll see.

  • It will be impressive if they don't.

But, I know they did the load testing and they have the staggering ... so maybe it will be limited to first day problems. Instead of first week / month problems.
  • I also think people will end up leveling at different speeds / some people are just going to hold back for others. That's how it went when we played Lotro together. I know I want to try out a bunch of classes, and Johnny and I are going to make some jedi sex friends or something, so my leveling won't be super fast. But then again, I have absolutely nothing to do and will be pretty much alone in Edmonton for two full weeks..
  • Anneveld said: make some jedi sex friends or something

Is that like playing tummy sticks with light sabers?
  • Let's just say we have a different definition of "force push."
  • Etter said: and it's likely best not everyone get it at the same moment.

I somewhat agree, but also feel there is huge disadvantages to not getting it at the same time. I want to play an MMORPG to play with other people, usually my friends. When my friends all get invites at different times, we cannot play together, which is kind of a pain. Its not a deal breaker by any means, but its a bit annoying. Had they announced that they would be doing different waves of emails, I wouldn't have really cared... or if they could say when people were getting access it would be OK, but I can also understand peoples frustration of pre-ordering the day it came out, waiting patiently for this opportunity, only to basically be told "lol sorry you have to wait for more emails tomorrow, and maybe even the next day!"

They also did a poor job at staggering it. Why send out 4 blocks of emails during an 8 hour window in the day, and not continue to send them out overnight? It might have made more sense to send out blocks of emails every 4 hours continuous through the next 2 days.
  • Yeah, sounds like it could have been done better. If they were more clear about what they were offering, that would have sufficed. I think it was people's expectations against what they actually ended up with.

That being said, everyone will be playing within a couple days and will have forgotten all about this. :p

    aye

Actually they have promised 5 days of early access to those who preorder. Anyone who has received theirs already is just receiving the gravy, nothing more.

Etter said: Turk - why is it a west coast server?

    Easy question, many answers.
    1) You will find the zone pretty trivial. Even during peak beta weekend I was still receiving a 45ms ping to the EU servers. I contemplated central for awhile, however I have found that there is a heavy traffic load for players during the 6-10pm period. "Many" of us play between 7-12 our time. Subtract the three hours and there will be a decent player pool during the same gaming hours we have. I was high when I thought, and I'm high while writing this. And both times it made sense.
    2) It's a clock! Throwing together a raid group? Post your start time in EST and PST.
    3) Anne needs to feel loved
    4) The guild many of us played WoW in will be playing on this server. On the republic side. They will be hardcore raiders, and will outnumber us. Who doesn't like the sound of being the underdog? (Official adversaries)
    5) West coast servers in some situations are the last to go down, and the last to come up when it comes to maintenance. Now Blizzard for example trumps this argument as their services become available all at the same time. With SWG you could count on certain servers coming up before others. And if there were problems with patches, maintenance days that was mostly discovered and corrected by the time the West coast servers were due to come up and patches applied. In essence these days though, the EU servers would be the appropriate guinea pigs.
  • I'm sold!
  • I got my invite... who's got theres?

Turk do you have a list of who on these forums is playing and who's got access?

Figured to see, I wouldnt mind going on with someone tonight and playing a bit.
  • I ordered on December 1 so I dont imagine I'll get mine until like the 19th. When did you order, Gif?
  • I order mine early September. But I'm thinking anyone who pre-ordered gets in at least 5 days before no?

Turk said: Actually they have promised 5 days of early access to those who preorder.

So hopefully today too, since the release date is December 20th?

  • I thought they said "up to 5 days" meaning we wouldn't all get 5 days. But if you ordered in September then you never know. I would be surprised though.
  • I might just buy it from futureshop to avoid the bandwidth (it's a huge client right?).
Oh god what has the Internet come to for me.
  • So there's some Legacy system that allows you to assign a last name that will carry over to all your characters. I've been thinking hard and I've come up with a great last name: Skywalker. It's awesome because, like, all the dudes are in space (LIKE THEY ARE WALKING THROUGH THE SKY!) and also it has this sort of American indian overtone to it that I like because I'm racist.
  • Mr.Clark said: I might just buy it from futureshop to avoid the bandwidth (it's a huge client right?).

    It is huge. Like 25gb.

    That being said, TekSavvy ftw.

    (Aside from getting setup.)
  • Can't get it in baden sadly.
  • Mr.Clark said: Can't get it in baden sadly

I was able to sneakernet the beat client, just sayin
  • Who do I look for in-game for a guild invite?
  • Turk, Porom and whatever akira named himself
  • Mr.Clark said: Can't get it in baden sadly.

Weird cause you can get it in New Hamburg, which is about as poopy as Baden ;)
  • If these queue times continue after the official release, I probably will either play on a different server or not play at all. Its really not fun to wait 2 hours in queue when my ingame time is limited already, and nearly every server is full, and its defiantly not going to get any better with the official release.
  • wow how are they SO bad already?!? They have had time to look at their presale numbers. Do they have any explanation or announced plan?
  • Yes Wade I really hope swtor looks and either adds servers we can transfer to or expands the server so more people can be on at the same time. I have been in que for almost 2 hours now :(. I would really hate to give up the hours I have put in already. See what swtor does on release, hopefully positive!
  • Here is what they have to say: http://www.swtor.com/blog/regarding-server-queues

However it's still kinda of a BS answer. I'm not pleased, I'm with Wade, I have such limited time to play with two kids, work, wife, and a life, I cant stand waiting.
  • Mel and I were planning to buy the game and start playing together over the holidays. Should we not bother? Are the queues making casual levelling more or less impossible?
  • The queues at prime time right now are at least an hour long. If you play off prime, they're small.

They have to intend to raise the population caps when the game is actually released. That being said, with all the new people coming in at that point, they're just going to fill up again. Unless they have them capped really low right now.

Also, if you don't want to play on the server with the rest of us ... well, some servers are less full. (Tho, not by a lot ... and that's likely changing.)
  • Also, after waiting 1.5 hours to get on, I played for 45 minutes before the client crashed and I was slotted back into an 1100 person queue. Boo-urns.
  • Yeah, Gif, I saw that response.

    It sorta sounds like:

'We hope people stop playing so much. Soooo ... we'll wait a bit and see.'
  • Our seems to be one of the worst. Right now (1130pm ET) it has an estimated hour and fifteen minute queue but it's likely closer to two hours.

  • There are some PVE servers that are much better so you might be okay for those, Xocet. But you may also want to wait until launch to see what they do.
