My head hurts
  • RIM is now valued at $6.83B (Market Cap).
Zynga, makers of Farmville, are valued at $6.9B (Market Cap).

Zynga had a revenue of $960M in the last four quarters.
RIM had a revenue of $19B in the last four quarters.

Zynga had a loss of $0.23 a share last quarter.
RIM had a profit of $0.69 a share last quarter.

RIM has $1.5B cash on hand.
    Zynga doesn't.

RIM is worth less than our assets. And we're still growing as a company, adding 5 million customers last quarter.

    WTF stock market.
  • Despite the numbers, RIM has been written off to be out of business by next winter.

On the other hand, people are convinced that Farmville is going to continue to take over the world.

If stock prices had anything to do with performance . . . we'd live in a very different world.
  • You are all dooooooooooOoooOo00oo()ooomed
  • public perception is key epi.

right now the view of the public is RIM is doomed.
  • To be fair, Zynga does a lot more than just Farmville, and the valuation is definitely based on more than straight revenue.

RIM's growth tends to be outside of NA right now, where Zynga is in the public eye and is a "hot" company at this point.
  • IMHO it all comes down to this one thing (and this is coming from a RIM fan epi, you know that)

If RIM's BB10 phones aren't game changing the company probably is done for. All the cash in the bank in the world isn't going to save a company if no one wants to buy their stuff. PERIOD

Or they simply switch business models and continue on in a different role. You're forgetting that they do more than simply hardware, which accounts for a large portion of their revenue. If they simply work to continue to improve the BES service, start to offer it across multiple platforms and take the support contracts for them, I'm guessing they could survive. Its difficult to make money off of hardware these days.
  • At this point i don't think simply refocusing the company is enough. They have taken such a beating in public perception, and that's killed them in the markets. Refocusing would probably be viewed as a weak play by investors and the stock will continue to free fall.

IMHO (my opinion) a blockbuster is needed, or RIM might as well start looking for a buyer.
  • to illustrate my point. Every sector of the TSX is up this morning, while RIM is down another 3.3%
  • Whatever happened to the discussion about RIM making a BES that also supports iOS and Android devices?
