War Zones
  • What does everyone think?

I was a Battleground whore in Warcraft. So, it's not a big surprise that upon trying the War Zones in SWTOR I was pretty pleased.

I mean, I need to play them a bunch more to really have a feel ... but my first impression was good.

Has everyone else tried them out? Done any group queuing?
  • The Super Jedi Best Friends do the pvp a lot. I like it a lot. Can be frustrating in a game like hutball where knowing how to pass is so key and you frequently play with randoms who don't know what's going on.
  • Oh the other problem now is you might go up against a bunch of level 50s and they'll just roll you. It's awesome when you actually beat some teams with 50s, but usually they just have too much CC.
  • Something to remember when you are in pvp: underneath the enemy's health bar is a "resolve bar" (you have one as well). When it's full you can't CC that character anymore. Something to note so you're not wasting your stuns.
  • eEter, there was a Worgen death knight named Etter in Tol Barad earlier today, don't think it was you, but made me think of you.
  • Raz:
Don't play WoW any more - and it was a Priest when I did use that name. He's still out there somewhere, in theory.
  • Anne - we'll have to chat one of these nights. I didn't know about the resolve bar. And while I know how to throw, Hutt ball is pretty chaotic thus far ....
  • I am surprised they didnt seperate the PVP ques into levels....granted, that would probably increase wait times but....having a level 11 dude on your team while you getting mercilessly pounded by a 50 doesnt seem...super great.

THat being said, the gear/stat gain as you increase is actually not too high, so its not like a guy with 5 million HP is staring down a guy with 3. Only 3. 3 HP. The joke is the disparity. I am here all week folks.
  • I'm not exactly sure how they've done the 'magic balance' . . . but I'm only level 24, and while I'm not topping the leader boards, I feel like I'm doing fine. I've yet to be in a 1v1 situation where I've been destroyed. I mean, I lose, but I'm not being beat into the dirt.

Does the buff just bring everyone to a baseline in stats? I assume gear still counts on top of that baseline?
  • The buff brings everyone's stats up to the highest level. But the difference is usually in the abilities / the gear that the 50s are using. As always, CC is king, and the higher levels just have more of it. Still, a coordinated and smart team will beat a team of higher levels out to get the most kills because they're 1337 dewds.
  • SJBF are pretty good at civil war. Awkward gives his speech at the start to all the randoms that taking the outside turrets = instant reinforce = win and for some reason they listen to him.
  • Any idea how the 'capture effort points' and 'defend effort points' work?

I was playing Hutt ball . . . had several ball carries (tho no goals) and actively worked to kill opposition ball carriers. I thought they'd award points for this focus on the objectives (instead of farming random kills, right?) ... but I ended the match with 0.

Do you have to actually score?
  • I think you only get points for attacking the ball carrier. We played a game where we 6-0'd a team and they hardly had they ball ever (they were just awful and had no clue what they were doing). No one on our team had any objective points. They need to fix that.
  • Huttball objective points are a mystery-- scoring a TD or completing a pass yield no points. In Civil it is for capping, standing near a controlled point, and killing near a point.

The stat balance is OK for getting you competitive in a team environment, but 1v1'ing a 50 is very hard, maybe only 15% win rate due to baddies. For the reasons Anne said: you are like a level 50 wearing level 26 gear, and not using any newer abilities, nor having the skill points invested, nor having any pvp gear with the special PvP stat, expertise. With PvP gear alone the 50 gets +11% damage done to you and -11% incoming damage, which is a huge huge additional advantage. I would be perfectly fine with two brackets: a 50s only and a "the rest".

A lot of PvP WZ has degraded to a deathmatch because people are farming medals to get more commendations and valor. I am not sure why, everything is pretty cheap.

Another problem is the new EXP disparity in WZ between winning and losing. It was very small before so people would simply bot AFK in your WZ to farm levels, now it is great so any sign of losing and people quit the WZ early to requeue or quest level. In my opinion WZ PvP should simply yield 0 experience, to discourage people gaming the system to optimize their leveling.

World PvP has it's own problems of no real rewards at all. There should be good EXP for killing an opponent in world PvP, one of similar levels, with instant diminished returns for the killing the same player (100% first kill, 0% second kill.) Or a token, or an ear, or valor, or something. Currently killing another player in the world yields el zilcho.

  • DrAwkward said: I would be perfectly fine with two brackets: a 50s only and a "the rest".

I read that it is really divided in theory, but not enough 50s currently, so it falls back on mixing up the teams. In theory, if 16 level 50s all queued, it should put them together.

So, when the majority of people are at 50, it should split itself into brackets, kinda.

  • I find on the Server we play (Empire) on, I'm playing a lot of hutt ball, but thats because Hutt Ball is the Only WZ that will pit people of the same side against each other. So I'll do about 4-5 Games of Hutt ball for every 1 of the other. Seems like we have a lot more Empire than Republic on our server (at least playing WZs), so thats the down side.

I have an issue with the Bomb (Data break in?) one though, if you have to defender first you're at such a disadvantage, and here's why, every time the queue pops to enter, people always wait a few seconds (30 plus) to finish what they were doing, and defenders have to take a stupid speeder bike to the front spawn point, and if the countdown gets to 0, the doors open for like 2 seconds, and you then cant get out, while the attackers door doesnt close, they need to fix that.

World PvP: I agree I wish you got some Valor for killing people in World PvP, no Exp, but ya 100% Points with a diminishing return would be great. I've already got into some battles on Hoth while Questing, and it's always a good feeling to mess someone up randomly while you're questing.

Also I like the Exp fixes, still gives a lot either way, way more if you win of course, but ya I dont understand the farming of commidations, you get like 50-60 for playing anyways, more if you win, and 1 for every score you get and 1 for every MVP vote you get. (I give my MVP votes to the best healer always!), and the gear is fairly cheap, the champion gear is great, and I'm already saving up for that.

Also note: You can only have 1000 WZ comms, so buy stuff with it, or turn them into Mercanry Tokens, 30 for 10 ones, cause you need 200x200 for an Epic Box that could drop Champion Armour. Only problem you can only have one box on you at one time, so I have one in storage already for when I hit 50, and now I'm just saving so when I hit 50 I can buy 5 more right off the bat.

Anyone who wants to play, I play a lot of WZ on my Bounty Hunter so just message me, I will stop questing to play PvP any time.
  • Gif said: and the gear is fairly cheap

    Not /really/ cheap though.

I mean, 200x200, where it takes 10 to get 30 of the Merc tokens.

Then you can buy a bag. That will have some more tokens in it. Which you can use to buy bags with more tokens in it, etc.

It's still a bit of a grind if you want Battlemaster gear. (Which is fine ... not saying the top gear should be trivial to get.)

However, the fact that the bags are unique and level 50 bugs me. It pretty much says: "You can level up on PvP, but you can't start gearing up until you hit 50." ... which is annoying.

  • Gif said: nd defenders have to take a stupid speeder bike to the front spawn point

    Yes, this is broken.

Not to mention, if things are timed poorly, you nearly get kicked out of the warzone. I've been down to 5 seconds on my timer before the gate opened for me. That's a bit lame.

I think upon your first arrival to the warzone, you should be able to get through the 'gate' no matter if it is closed or not. That would solve the issues.
  • ohhh like a first arrived buff, let me in! I like it.

Anyone on the forums see if others are complaining about this... if not we should poke some interest about it, but I'm sure others have mentioned this ...

And what I meant is the lvl 20 and lvl 40 gear is cheap, ya the Champion+ Gear is a little more, but that stuff is almost equivalent to end game gear for Raiding, so it wont be trivial to get. Usually its specced for PvP too, but no matter, its still a decent way to get good gear when you're on (at 50) and no one else is, grind some PvP, get some gear, be ready for raiding still.
  • Also the bag will have tokens in it, or they could have a "Disassembled" Piece of Champion+ Gear. Which you can than turn in for the specific peice you want with Crit, or Power or what ever.
  • This thread has all the 'top issues' listed: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=45435

Don't see that one in particular showing up.

Oh, I jumped into a Warzone with my level 10 BH last night. While I was certainly under powered, the balancing system worked well enough that it was still fun. I feel like all the qqing about brackets is a bit over kill.
  • Trust me, while you feel like a you, at lvl 10, think you're doing alright, you're not. :)

You cant heal as fast, you have no CC, you have no debuff abilities, and most importantly, you dont have sprint yet. :P
  • I understand what I'm missing. But, I can still kill. I just need to approach the game in a different way and put myself into different positions.

On the level 27 character, I'm feeling very little disparity. Still some when I hit a well geared level 50 . . . but if you read the forums people are qqing that they have no chance at all and it's no fun, blah blah blah. And I don't really buy it.
  • Ya, I'm finding at lvl 44, even playing against a lvl 20+ I cant straight out smash them to the ground, but still geared lvl 50s are dominating me if they initiate on me. However a lvl 10-20 gets smashed by me every time. I mean I have 50+% health in a 1v1. But ya, you can be useful in team fights, stand back, dont initiate the team battles etc. Also if you can hide in the crowd, you can manage to stay alive, I find a lot, if you can just keep your health full, people wont target you since they are targetting the lowest health dude.

But I do tend to pick pick off the weak ones when I can, Ive noticed a considerable difference in health between max level and lower levels, I mean, 3-5K difference, and that I will assume is gear based differences at that point, and even though I can crit for 2K plus with my missles, it means its 2 or 3 less casts I have to do to try and kill a lower level, also they have much less armour to mitigate the dmg. I also find the buff helps lower levels to out put a lot of dmg then they would normally and closer to on par with higher levels, but are much more squishy. So if focused, drop like stones.
  • That aside, I have some issues with it, but not as much as others seem too. Brackets would be nice, but arent the vain of WZs for me. No team work, and no incentives for team work would be number one. Killing gives points, and comms, so thats what people do.... booo!!
  • 1) Scoring and Assists (and maybe secondary assists) should be worth something in Huttball

    2) Killing within range of the ball should be worth more. Not only directly assisting the ball handler or killing the ball handler. If I'm taking out his support, that's more valuable than killing a random dude on the other side of the map.

    3) Same sort of shit could apply for defending doors and points. TF2 gives points for this stuff. I mean, these systems have been developed before.

    4) If killing is going to be The Big Thing, they should create a Deathmatch Warzone. Fuck the 'objectives'. If they want pure kills to be the biggest factor, just give me a ring and let me spam dps, right?
  • 1) To add: Successful passes to teammates should be worth something, like a successful pass to a teammate that ends up leading to a score is an assist. (So as to not encourage douch bags to throw the ball around.) and only one point per score. So I mean everyone who touched the ball gets a point, and scorer gets one for passing the line. (This will encourage people to throw the ball to people standing on the goal line.) I feel like I'm standing on the goal line, dude with the ball thinks he can make it, surrounded by 5 baddies wailing on him, and he wont throw the ball to me, but with the above mentioned, he'd get a point, and so would I for scoring.

    2) Agreed: With in the same range the ball can be thrown or something would work.

    3) I think they might do that already in some other fashion. Awkward might know.

    4) Agreed: A Team Death Match with all kinds of hazards, and shit would be a lot of fun, and it would satisfy those needs for just killing opponents. I can only assume we'll see some sort of 2v2 or 3v3 system built in eventually too.

All and all, one patch has already come out, and they addressed some of the issues V1.0 had, now V1.01 is out, and it too now has some other issues to work out, but I'm sure they'll get around to it, but either way I'm very very pleased with the Warzones out of the box. I mean WoW had years of development, and feedback behind it.

Who remembers single server Queuing for A.Basin, and the all day battles. Also those 1-2hour stalemate battles over the bridge. Those were some good times, but also had their problems. :) I wonder if BioWare will allow for cross server queueing, not that I have to wait very long right now for a PvP match, it would just be nice not to have to play Hutt ball 80% more often than anything else.
  • Ohh Ctrl-S is your friend for the first 90secs of Hutt Ball, so you dont have to listen to that god damn announcer every single time!
  • We played last night vs what appeared to be a pvp guild of level 50s. There were 5 or 6 of them in the server when we played as our alts (none of those characters are above 22 I think) and got wrecked in civil war. When we played them again as our mains on hutball we beat them with johnny holding onto the ball for the last minute of play to get the tiebreaker. It was pretty awesome because I was spamming heals on him and trademark got like 3 protect medals in the span of 30 seconds from shielding him.
  • And yeah, as republic we get a decent balance of what we play. I'm not sure if our server is crazy imbalanced for the ratio of imperial:republic though... Sure are a ton of sith shooting lightning everywhere though.
  • speaking of which I'm amped to play some WZs tonight. I'll be on around ummm 8pm EST on Dark Reaper to play some Huttball and maybe some Alderan or Void Star if you care to join me.
  • Hmmm, maybe I should try giving it a whirl but I am having a lot of fun leveling atm. I hear my class/spec is good for pvp though (concealment operative).

    I'm scared though.
    Hold me.
  • Lets break your PvP Cherry Clark! I wanna watch....
  • Gif said: speaking of which I'm amped to play some WZs tonigh

I curl tonight, but I might be on a bit before bed to play at 10ish or so.
  • I thought you would be a gentle caring lover Gif, but apparently you are just creepy.
  • I get that a lot, until you get to know my sensual skills with my hands. :P
  • HoTs and such?
  • Looks good. Hopefully they get those implemented!
  • Cool. Good to see its getting traction and attention. Wouldnt mind doing some World PvP once we get some more 50s or close to 50s around as well.
