Picked up a Razer Naga MMOG Mouse

They are $10 off right now at CC, and I got BestBuy to price match from 89.99 to 69.99.

    Impressions so far:
    - I find the extra 12 buttons helps a lot with SWTOR already.
    - The mouse is a little too small for my hand, but I am getting use to it (it looks much larger than it is in in pics I saw online)
    - The back and forward side buttons are awkwardly placed (sucks for web browsing)
    - The side 12 buttons feel very nice and are easier to use than you might think. You can choose to have them represent 1 through = (top numbers on your keyboard), or your keypad (just keep num lock on). There is a switch on the bottom of the mouse for either option - I have not installed any drivers yet. It just works.

Overall I am happy I picked it up. The number of abilities available in SWTOR is huge (40-50), and most of them are important at some point. This lets me lay them out in a convenient way and avoids having to click on them.

It is my first new mouse in 10 years (really)!
  • Man, so many buttons in the same spot. Do you find it easy to know what button you're pressing with your thumb?

I mean, to go from 2 to 12 to 4 without looking ... does that feel natural?
  • Neat, speaking of which, I'd like to know how people have their abilities setup for PvP, its fast paced, and requires lots of skills (not all of them mind you) are your finger tips but I have a hard time hitting anything passed 5 with my keyboard. So I tend to have my Instant Cast Abilities on 1-5 so I can do those while moving. But this might be a good alternative.
  • 1,2,3,4,5
    q,e,r,t
    f,g
    c,v
    `

tab is self cast modifier (so, tab + any of those keys casts on me without changing target)

mouse wheel targets (spin up, spin down)
2 extra keys on my mouse + middle mouse are bound to abilities too

That pretty much gives me access to everything I need.
  • Etter, I find I am able to use it effectively enough after only a couple of hours. I do occasionally glance down to confirm where my thumb is. Most people online say it takes about 10-20 to get very good at it, and most tend to stick to about 9 buttons for quick access depending on their hand size. Some keys have grooves to help confirm your placement (like f and j on the keyboard) and the mouse includes extra training stickies for those that need it. You do need to be prepared to spend the time learning it.

I think once you hit 50 you may find that is not enough keys Etter. I guess it depends how much you want to rely on clicking for less used skills or not. The operative has about 45 skills and I think 80%+ of them are critical for PVP. Of course, maybe only 15-20 get used frequently (which is still a lot) but the others are still critical in the right situation, and need to be accessed quickly. Do you at least use shift or something to double those keys use?

Gif, personally I am running with this right now:

1-5 & 1-5 plus shift: Main melee dps abilities
Q,E,R,F,C,V (plus shift too): Interrupts and "Oh Shit get me out of here" type abilities
    x: self-target modifier
    Naga, 1-6: Ranged dps abilities
    Naga 7-12: Heals
Naga 1-6 plus shift: out of combat convenience like recharge
Naga 7-12 plus shift: stealth & other frequent enhancements
    Middle mouse: cloak

I actually took some time yesterday to roughly plan where I would put all my abilities up to level 50 (including alternate build types) so that I don't have to move things around too much after learning them.

Using the mouse wheel to cycle targets is interesting. Do others do that? I guess I shouldn't be zooming in and out anymore. I still use tab, but perhaps it could be better used for something like self-targeting.

  • Mouse Wheel for Targetting Players, Good call, Tab I use for Targetting, currently dps, but when I was doing Healing I found getting the right guy to heal was tricky in heated battles. Maybe Wheel to cycle through all Allies? Hmm.
  • I used shift-mouse wheel to cycle allies.

Clark - I honestly can only keep 20 or so abilities mapped in my mind.

I'm not sure you need everything to be a decent PvP player. If you can leverage /everything/, sure, it will give an advantage. But, mostly PvP has cycles of abilities that you use. I'll have to see as I get to be higher level if those aren't enough for me.

I modify with shift for all the stuff, I just don't currently have much double mapped.

(I also don't mind clicking some abilities which aren't as time sensitive. Buffs, turning on sprint, switching 'modes' (stances or whatever you want to call them), etc. Plenty of things get used only a little or in low leverage situations, so I forget where I had them mapped even if I do it.)

  • Also picked up this mouse (molten version) quite happy with it so far. I use the sticky trainers on it and will probably keep em on.
  • Still loving the mouse. I am using a few sticky trainers as well now, and will probably keep them on. It comes with quite a few so it's not a worry if they fall off or whatever (though they are well made).

For me, I think just having a new 5600dpi mouse is nice. I loved my old mouse but I realize now it wasn't quite as accurate as the newer gaming mice.

Etter - fair enough. I'm not critiquing, and I get where you are coming from. I think, really, I just wanted a new toy to play with.

I am becoming annoyed with the SWTOR UI though. Specifically, there aren't enough quickbar locations for me. There are the four quickbars available, which covers off my mouse, 1-5, and `qerfcv well enough, but I now also want to assign some routine items to my function keys.

There is a fifth quickbar, but it seems like you can only rotate to it on your main bar, and not assign shortcuts directly to it. I wonder if you can do that by editing a configuration file directly. Damn it.

Does your character even have enough skills to fill all those quick bars? Are you microing your companion all the time?
  • Clark is hardcore. I'm not sure where all these abilities are coming from! :)

I do look forward to UI Modifcations . . . I loved modding my UI in WoW.
  • My character has about 40+ legitimate abilities (at 50). Then there are things like trinkets and pots to consider, as well as routine out of combat tasks.

I imagine there are enough slots today, realistically. But, I prefer to keep similar tasks grouped together in a way that makes sense to my mind (otherwise I'll have a very hard time remembering what to click). It's just not quite working out the way I want.

I don't think I am actually a hardcore player at all, I'm sure I am just being a little OCD'sh (unnecessarily) with my key layout right now.

Has Bioware commented on future UI modifications? I know they plan to add things like combat logs but will they eventually have a whole plugin system like WoW?
  • You wont use all 40 trust me. Depending on the skill tree you go down, you negate certain abilities. Like I know a few abilities I have are just less powerful versions of something I get in my middle tree as a BH. That is not to say I wouldnt mind more bars as well, especially when I have my companion out and she is taking up one full bar.
  • See, I want to plan for being able to do any of my three trees. Which means I could potentially be doing primarily melee dps, ranged dps, or healing.

I need to keep enough space in the right "areas in my head" for the extra abilities that might be useful for those specs. I don't want to reassign abilities whenever possible. I want to plan for the future.

I want a brighter future, one free from the oppression of four limited quickbars. I dream of this better tomorrow.
  • They've stated they'll allow more UI Customization.

I don't really know what that means.
  • They probably don't either. :)
